Keeping mums active.

Activity levels drop drastically with motherhood looming. Tees Valley Sport asked us to support them in creating materials that would encourage mums to get active before, during and after pregnancy.

What we did: Creative direction / illustration / graphic design

According to Public Health England, increasing numbers of pregnant women are saying they are either less active, or not active at all once pregnant. Tees Valley Sport, one of 43 local delivery partners for Sport England, are committed in trying to tackle this issue for local women in Teesside. They asked us to help them create some materials that would let mums know what was best for their bodies.

To encourage mums to stay active, we designed a suite of leaflets that could be handed out before, during and after pregnancy. We collaborated with an incredibly talented, local illustrator, Ella Miller, to develop a bright and bold, yet ‘grown up’, illustrative style with a strong ‘wellbeing’ theme. We wanted to avoid creating anything that looked overly clinical and stereotypical of usual healthcare leaflets you might see in GP surgeries.

The beautiful set of illustrations show women getting active in various different ways. We were careful to make the illustrations inclusive, showing as much diversity as we could. The loose style has a quirky edge to it with bold pencil marks and textures taking centre stage, giving the work a very tactile, hand-drawn feel.

“I’ve loved working with Studio Resolve on my project. I was honestly blown away by how they took my basic idea and created such beautiful resources; that’s the first thing I hear in every meeting I take the designs to - how brilliant they look! They completely encapsulated the brief of 'non-clinical, warm and accessible’.”

A lot of health messages are delivered in really uninspiring ways and therefore easy to ignore. It was important with this project that we created something mums would actually want to pick up. By collaborating we were able to develop a really beautiful illustrative style that exuded wellness, warmth and trust.

The hope is that these resources will also be utilised by the other 43 active partnerships across the UK, meaning our resources would be used by GP surgeries, hospitals and midwives up and down the country.

“I'm an illustrator who finds joy in crafting vibrant designs and endearing characters that radiate personality. My love for storytelling seeps into both personal projects and professional endeavours, adding a touch of enchantment to everything I do. With a blend of traditional illustration and modern graphic design, I'm adaptable to various styles. I love working with bright colours, bold designs and scribbling with crayons.”
